Unsure which cap or plug to use?

Before deciding which cap or plug to use we require answers to some questions:

1. what processes is it going to encounter?

2. do you require re-usable or disposable?

3. is the stud/hole threaded or non-threaded?

4. course or fine thread?

5. is it Metric or Imperial?

6. is it vital that the plug/cap remains on the component for the complete finishing process?

Silicone = Re-usable.

EPDM = Limited re-usability

Vinyl = Disposable.

A method of deciding which internal diameter cap to use for a Metric threaded bolt is for example a M8 bolt will fit comfortably through a 8mm diameter hole so a slightly smaller cap will be required (7.6mm id). A captive M8 nut will have a slightly smaller diameter than a M8 bolt because of the interlacing of the threads so a plug that will block a 7.5mm hole would be required.
